"(Ital.) Florence. Gallileo before the inquisitors. 43 x 32. this painting is supposed to represent gallileo in presence of the secret tribunal of three, called the inquisition. The great philosopher, at the date of this episode in his life (June 22nd, 1633.], was about seventy years of age. Possibly the motion of the earth, maintained by him, is under discussion. he was forced to retract his theory on that point. There is some fair painting in this picture, but the subject is clearly a great deal too big for the artist."
