He was a pupil of Simon Vouet whom he excelled very soon; when twelve years of age, he painted the portrait of his uncle, and at fifteen he painted a Hercules which was most admired. He executed a great number of pictures under Louis XIV. [P. 6; see entry 04100001 for a note on the work's provenance.]
