This celebrated Artist, born at Antwerp in 1594, was much liked and favoured by Rubens who gave him work. He had a great understanding of the chiaro oscuro; he equalled if he did not surpass Rubens by the vigor of his colouring; his expression is strong and true, and for a free and spirted touch hardly any painter can be accounted his superior.
