Landscape (A Sea Port), (painting)

Vernet, Jos.
Exhibition Catalogs
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 8
Celebrated for his marine compositions and landscapes composed from views in Italy. He gave to his paintings the charm of nature and they are much admired for the fluidity of the water, and the spirit of the figures. His reputation induced the King of France, Louis XV, to appoint him his marina [sic] painter. As a proof in what estimation Vernet was held, it may be mentioned that two of his pictures, now in the Luxembourg Gallery, were purchased by Madame Du Barry for 50,000 livres. [P. 4; see entry 04100001 for a note on the work's provenance.]
