Samuel J. Hitchcock was born in the town of Bethlem [sic], Conn., and was graduated Bachelor of Arts at Yale College in 1809, with the highest honors. . . . He died in New Haven, Aug. 31st, 1845, in the 60th year of his age. This portrait was painted by Jared W. Flagg. [Pp. 24-25; excerpted from a detailed biography of the sitter.]
