George Gibbs was born in Newport, R.I., Jan. 8, 1782. Being interested in the study of Mineralogy, he collected, during his travels in Europe, chiefly by purchase, a rich and extensive Cabinet of minerals. . . . He died at his seat, Sundswick Farms, Newtown, (L.I.) N.Y., Aug. 5, 1833, aged 57. [Pp. 23-24.]
