William Samuel Johnson, eldest son of Rev. Samuel Johnson, D. D., first President of King's (now Columbia) College, N.Y., was born at Stratford, Conn., October 7th, 1727. . . . He resigned the presidency of Columbia College in 1800, and removed to Stratford, where he died November 14, 1819, in the 93d year of his age. . . . This painting is a copy by Fitch of Lebanon, Conn., of an original portrait by Stuart, and was presented to the College by Samuel Wm. Johnson, Esq., of Stratford. Dr. Johnson is represented in the habit of a Doctor of Laws of the University of Oxford, from which he received the Honor of a diploma, in 1766. [Pp. 12-13.]
