Roger Sherman was Born in Newton, Mass., April 19th, 1721. Mr. Sherman had not the advantages of an early education, and rose to distinction, in a great measure, by his own unassisted efforts. . . . He died in New Haven, July 23d, 1793, in the 73d year of his age. . . . This painting is a copy of an original portrait by Earle. [Pp. 11-12.]
