John Davenport was born in the year 1597, in the city of Coventry, in Warwickshire, England, . . . He died March 11th, 1670. A biographical sketch of Mr. Davenport is given by Rev. Leonard Backon, D.D., in his Historical Discources. (New Haven, 1839. 8) The portrait, from a date on the canvas, appears to have been taken the year of his death. The name of the artist is unknown.
