"Born in New York City, 1848. Studied at Cooper Institute under Dr. Rimmer, and at the Art Students' League, New York, and at the San Francisco school of Design, under Virgil Williams, San Francisco, Cal." [P. XLVII; illustration depicts elderly man seated at desk composing music. He holds his pen to his lips and looks out at viewer in attitude of contemplation. Various writing implements are strewn about the desk. Engraving is annotated "from National Academy Notes, 1886."]
