"Born at west point, N.Y., 1852. Began the study of art in 1876, under R. Swain Gifford, and subsequently studied under L. E. Wilmarth, A. Cary Smith, J. Carrol Beckwith, and at the National Academy, New York. Was a pupil also of Carolus Duran, in Paris, and of Hippolyte Michaud, at beaune, Cote D'Or, France." [P. XXXII.]
