First studied at the National Academy, New York; afterward (1859-1862) at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under Kaulbach; 1864-1867 in Paris, in L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, and with J.L. Gerome. First exhibited, 1866, in the National Academy, New York. Elected A.N.A., 1870; N.A., 1872. Now director of the schools of the National Academy of Design." [P. LII.]
