"Born in Sweden, 1819. Began life as a sailor, but in 1842 settled in Buffalo and began the study of art, turning his attention particularly to portraiture. In conjunction with Thomas Leclear, William H. Beard, and others, he was instru- mental in founding the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. He was secretary and director of the Academy from 1862 to 1876; was its president in 1876 and '77, but from preference again became its director in 1878. Mr. Sellstedt was elected an associate of the National Academy, New York, 1871, and a member of the same, 1874." [P. XLVIII.]
