"Born in Philadelphia, 1863. Studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Professor schusselle, and later with his father, in Philadelphia. In 1881 visited Spain, where he made many studies. In 1884 studied under Bouguereau and Tony Robert Fleury, later traveling in Holland, Belgium, and in Spain. Received an award at the New Orleans Exposition in 1885 for his painting, 'the marabout's lion.'" [P. XXXVII.]
