"b. New York City, 1842. In 1870 vistied Rome and studied in the studio of J.G. Chapman. In 1874 entered the Art Students' League, New York, at its foundation. First exhibited, 1866, at the National Academy, New York. Director of the schools of the Art Students' League, New York."[P. 89; illustration depicts a standing figure in historic dress flexing the blade of a sword to test the metal. An ornately carved chair holds two other swords.]
