"b. Birmingham, England, 1829. Taken by his family to America in 1841, to Taunton, Mass. Went to Boston in 1844, and subsequently connected himself with decorating firms in that city and Philadelphia. In 1854 entered life class in Pennsyl- vania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and later studied for a time with Paul Mayerheim in Paris. Awarded medal and diploma at the Centennial Exposition.
