"b. Bolton, Lancashire, England, 1842. Was brought to America when a child, and studied art with his brother, Thomas Moran, in Philadelphia. In 1863 went to London and studied the manner of the english masters for a time. Member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the American Art Union. Received a medal for his painting at the Centennial Exposition. Has achieved high reputation as an etcher." [P. 23.]
