"b. Paris, 1815. Brother of Edouard Frere and pupil of Cogniet and Roqueplan. He first exhibited in the Salon in 1834. Two years later he went to algiers, and much of his life has been spent in the east, as much of his work having been accomplished in his studio in Cairo as in his studio in Paris." [P. 21.]
