"b. Bucks County, Pa. Began professional career as a portrait painter. Spent two years in study in Italy. Went to brazil with the intention of procuring material for a work on the hummingbirds of south America, which, however, was not published on account of difficulty with reproductinve processes for color illustrations. While in brazil, Mr. Heade received from the Emperor the decoration of 'Chevalier of the Rose.' No one of our artists has a more refined sense of beauty or a more delicate feeling for color. - Tuckerman, Book of the Artists." [P. 19.]
