"b. Kensington, England, 1779. Pupil of Hoppner. At first practiced portrait painting, but later devoted himself to landscapes. He has been called the 'English Claude.' The Queen conferred Knighthood upon him in 1837, and in 1844 he was appointed conservor of the Royal pictures. d., 1844." [P. 15.]
