"b. Bremen, 1839. Brought to America at an early age. Pupil of L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, Yvon and J.L. Gerome, Paris, and for some time in the studios of Jacquesson De La Chevreuse and Cornu. He received two medals from the Imperial School of Design in Paris. From Europe he came to New York and remained there until 1871, when he was appointed professor of drawing in the Yale School of Fine Arts, at New Haven." [P. 60.]
