"Berlin. b. Wiesbaden, 1829. Pupil of Jacobi, and the Academy of Duesseldorf under Sohn and Schadow. Afterward he allied himself with Lessing, Leutze, and Webber. Member of the academies of Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Christiana. Officer of the Legion of Honor and Knight of the Order of Merit. Many medals. Grand Medal of Honor, Exposition Universelle, 1867. Now professor in the Academy at Berlin. " one of the first of living German artists, his works are distinguished for their excellent drawing, full, rich color, and vigorous realism." [P. 34-35.]
