"The large painting which faces the entrance to the art gallery is 1. the masked ball, by Charles Hermans, representing a portion of the interior of the grand opera house, showing part of the parquet and lower balcony, with a group of revelers in the foreground, and many masked and grotesquely costumed figures beyond. The picture is gorgeoius in color, and contains some strong, suggestive painting. It was loaned from the Temple collection in the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts." [P. 5.]
