A Full Length Portrait of Benjamin West, (painting)
Lawrence, Thomas Sir
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 38
Mr. West is here represented in his character of President of the Royal Academy, delivering a lecture to the students. Under his right hand is seen standing on an easel, a copy of Raphael's cartoon of the death of Ananias. The subject of the lecture is coloring, as indicated by the rain-bow tints, arranged on the left side of the picture. Mr. West was born at the village of Springfield, in Pennsylvania, Oct. 10, 1738. His parents belonged to the Society of Friends. Many interesting anecdotes have been related of the early years of Mr. West, which show how strong was the natural bent of his genius. . . . He died on the 11th of March, 1820, in the eighty-second year of his age. [Pp. 22-25; excerpted from a detailed biography of West.]
