Three soldiers of the Royal French Guard seated around a drum, playing cards; the one on the left appears to have lost and is angrily pointing with one hand to the ace of diamonds, while with the other he has seized a tankard to strike his opponent, who is endeavouring to make an explanation; the middle one of the group is reaching out his hand, to prevent the execution of the threat of their passionate comrade, and to recover the tankard to be replenished by an inn-keeper entering on the left.
