In the middle of the room, with his back to the light, is seated an old gentleman, with a large volume opened on his lap; on his right, a table with two antique vases, books, manuscripts, &c., and a dish of fruit; at the back of the room a carved book case, and in front of the cabinet, with a curious collection piled up by its door, consisting of a lute, a gold cup and plate, portfolios, &c.
