By VANDYCK, (Sir Anthony) a celebrated Historical and Portrait Painter, born at Antwerp in 1599, and died in 1641 aged 42; he received his first instructions from Henry Van Balin, and afterwards became the disciple of Rubens; and distinguished himself so highly in the school of that great Artist, that he conferred honour on his instructor. Charles the 1st presented him with a chain of gold and his own Portrait richly adorned with diamonds, and also conferred on him the order of Knighthood in 1632. [P. 13.]
