(1494-1533.) Considered the head of the Dutch School 1494-1523. St. Christopher, 1521. Very fine; his best work. C. The saint is given as a colossal figure; the very sight of him is supposed to bring on accession of strength and confidence in the Divine aid. The Infant Christ is seated on his shoulders, and bears in his hand the globe, as Sovereign and Creator of the world. The saint is making his way painfully through the rising waters; he supports himself as usual with a staff. [P. 33.]
