A rare example of this renowned German artist, very different from his earlier and more familiar manner, bolder in subject and handling with all his old sweetness of sentiment and delicacy of touch. The subject appeals to every one: a fisherman's wife, wan with watching through a stormy night, gladdens her child and her own weary eyes in the morning sunlight, bursting through the clouds and promising the mariner's return.
