The scene is in the Catacombs of Rome. The martyr, wrapped in linen according to Oriental custom, is surrounded by relatives and friends. At the feet of the corpse, the priest in alb and chasuble offers prayer. Two women--the betrothed and a pious friend of the deceased--express by their actions a grief and despair. The mother falls into the arms of the younger son. The costumes of the various figures are such as were worn at that period, in the early centuries of the Christian era. [P. 19.]
