German. 1420-1499. "Schongauer may justly be considered as the 'Master of German art.' His drawing is inaccurate, and his drapery stiff and formal, but there is an ideal beauty in his subjects, and a refinement and delicacy in his mode of engraving them, which place him above any of his precedessors in the art. When we consider that these engravings were produced four centuries ago, we are justly amazed at the skill of this artist." B. 49. Original. [P. 16.]
