"Born in Breslau, Feb. 15, 1808, Professor at Carlsruhe Academy. " The two acknowledged chefs d'oeuvre of the great German artist illustrating one of the most important episodes of the reformation. The late lamented Professor Wiegmann, in his history of the art academy of Dusseldorf, writes of these pictures: 'In these paintings he (Lessing) had no other object than to give, from his individual stand-point, the most impart- ial historically true representation of a great historical moment. Nothing was remoter from his thought than partisan hatred of religion, or especially of Catholicism. His works can be cited with reference to sects to exhibit indifference, but never irreligion.' These pictures, separated for many years, have been brought together, and are loaned out of one of the choicest selections of works of art in the west." [P. 13; serials 03480145 and 03480146 collectively index this commentary.]
