"The real name of Lely, who was born at Loest, in Westphalia, was Peter Van Der Faes. He was born in 1618, and died in 1680. He went to england, and was knighted by charles ii., and became the most celebrated portrait painter after Vandyck. This picture came from the collection of the late king of Holland, imported into this country and sold in 1871."
