"In 1816, Mr. James McMurtrie, of Philadelphia, being in London, requested the favor of Benjamin West to allow a copy of Guido's Head of Christ, then in his (West's) possession, to be made by some competent artist. The request was granted, and Mr. Leslie pointed out as the painter who the owner wished to duplicate his picture. Allston said, 'The copy is a very close one, and would embellish any collection.' this famous picture was long a cherished number in the fine gallery of the lamented Charles Sumner. Painted by Charles Robert Leslie, R.A."
