"Giotto Di Bondone, the author of this interesting specimen, was rescued from the obscurity of a shepherd's cottage. He had accustomed himself from infancy, selftaught, to design after nature, he ever afterwards adhered to the practice, and it was the basis of his style. His figures are always unaffectedly varied in their distribution, attitudes and expressions, according to the subject they are employed to represent, and a certain easy gracefulness is every where apparent in them."
