"The moment chosen for the subject of this picture is imaginary, and is probably intended to express the force of Peter's convic- tion after the crucifixion of our Lord. Perhaps the surprise of Peter is as excessive as the energetic action of the saviour, in whom gentleness always predominated." [P. 6.]
