"The subject is taken from Longfellow's poem of 'The Courtship of Miles Xtandish.' John Alden and Priscilla have just made up their love quarrel, and with feelings of mingled pain and pleasure are 'casting a farewell look at the glimmering sail of the Mayflower,/ distant, but still in sight and sinking below the horizon.'"
