"With the certificate of the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts, and a history of the picture on the back of the canvas." " Positive original by Bartolomeo Murillo; obtained in Madrid by medium of Chevalier Vicente Lopez, first painter to his majesty and director of the Royal Museum, and presented to his excellency Rev. Cardinal Manuel de Gregorio. Year 1837." [P. 20; illustration depicts dead Christ on cross in dark landscape. A single figure of an unidentfiable saint grasps his feet and gazes upward at the dead body.]
