A copy by Lega, from the original portrait by Sir Peter Leley. The original was painted expressly as a present to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and was sent by Cromwell in his life time. It is in the Pitti Palace of the Grand Duke of Florence, and is considered the truest likeness now known. The copy is exceedingly accurate, and doubtless presents the true features of the Protector.
