The "Venus Genetrix" is one of several similar figures, which, says Schweighauser, in Piranesi's Musee Napoleon, exhibit in their attitude and the tunic which they hold, characteristics quite the same as those which many be distinguished on the medals of Roman Emperors, and which gave to Venus the ephithet of Genetrix, describing her in her maternal character. The original of this cast was found at Monte Circello, and is now in the Louvre. It is of an early Greek style, or an imitation after it. [P. 10; exhibited under heading: "Catalogue of Casts."]
