Second best Portrait in Oil, (life size.)--to--Haebernicht, Sacramento. Subject, "W.C. Felch, Esq.," Sacramento. An excellent likeness, with much vigor of expression. In truthfulness and fidelity to the subject, this portrait indicates an innate talent, which, if properly cultivated by that application and enthusiasm which art so happily inspires, will elevate the artist to considerable eminence in his profession. The painting is not of that fine and elaborate finish which too often indicates a timid hand, but is touched boldly, though not altogether successfully in the coloring. The shadows lack in depth, while the higher lights are rather too much diffused. Such defects, however, can easily be corrected by one who has already arrived at so much advancement. Less vermillion and more cool gray in the flesh will give a more pleasing effect to the eye, and the more true to nature. [P. 209.]
