Among the contributions of Dr. J.M. Frey, of Sacramento, we find several relics of considerable value. The four original engravings of Hogarth consist of the well-known election scenes. The boldness, originality, and happy handling, of this subject present the same unique example, which all Hogarth works do, of the successful application of pictorial art to quantity of subject and number of allusions. If any one doubts the correctness of the principles on which Hogarth founded the style most congenial to his mind and in which he so well succeeded, "that occular demonstration will carry more conviction to the mind of a sensible man than all he would find in a thousand volumes," let him look at these prints which bear the stamp of the original engraver, and he must acknowledge that though the execution is excellent, this constitutes but a secondary merit.
