The first of these, "View of Haycock's Mill, Tuolumne County," is seen at a point where the Table Mountain crosses Mormon Creek. The picture represents a summer evening, and the several varieties of California foliage, although well exhibited, are not properly toned in the massing. The dark rocks in the foreground, however, are so truthfully painted that it is easy to see they are composed of basaltic lava. [P. 209; see entries 02620083 for related commentary.]
