Second best Drawing, in India ink.--To George H. Baker, of Sacramento--second premium. Subject: "View of Nelson's Point, Middle Fork of American River." This drawing, from nature, gives a good idea of the steep declivities and rough gorges among and through which the mountain streams of California "Roll down their golden sand." It possesses some merit as an original production, but lacks in perspective, because the shadows are not properly graded; being entirely too deep in the distance. The finishing of this piece with the pen is inartistic, and, therefore, not commendable. We are satisfied Mr. Baker can do no better in India ink, and we hope he will verify the prediction at the next exhibition. [P. 212.]
