Best Portrait in Oil, (medium size.)--To S.W. Shaw, of San Francisco--first premium. Subject--"J.P. Leese, Esq." Monterey. In this portrait we recognize the physiognomical characteristics of the strong purpose, high resolve, and untiring perseverance, which belong to one of California's most respected early pioneers. The mild, yet tempered, calmness, the cheerful countenance, and healthy glow, all speak of a life well spent by one who keepeth his soul in peace. The chief merit of this portrait, as a work of art, is found in the relief of the head and the force of color. [P. 208; entries 02620032, 02620033, 02620034, and 02620035 were exhibited together as: "Seven portraits in oil on canvas, drawn from life."]
