This embodiment of the actual things seen and felt, is also beautifully represented in the small picture, "The Study of Rocks," wherein ideal expression and scientific knowledge are most happily combined. The same attention to correct drawing of masses, which characterizes all Mr. Butman's pictures, is conspicuous in the large granite boulder jutting out in the foreground, beyond which the eye is carried over a hazy distance of broken country to the distant mountains that loom up dimly against the dark grey cumulo-stratus clouds that shut out the setting sun. . . . In the present instance, although it seems that the heavens are entirely covered with clouds, yet a cool light shines forth, producing dark, warm, shadows from the granite rocks. A very simple reasoning proves whence the light proceeds, and how the eye is often deceived by such a projection. . . . This study reflects great credit upon the artist, and has justly received universal commendation. [P. 207; entries 02620027, 02620028, 02620029, 02620030, and 02620031 were exhibited together as: "Five oil paintings of California scenery."]
