In the landscape of "Washoe Lake," by the same artist, we have another instance of this truth of form and color in the clouds. This region is a windy one--several thousand feet above the level of the sea--on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada range. When a chain of mountains is looked at from a distance, clouds are generally seen attached to each summit, whilst the intervals are perfectly clear. Their apparent immobility is only imaginary, for on these summits there often prevails a violent wind, which condenses the vapors as they ascend along the flanks of the mountains; when they are far from the summits they do not fail to dissipate. This well known physical phenomenon, so often observed in the Alps, has been exemplified in the present picture, and the moment has been seized when the formation, the movements, and the disappearance, of clouds form a sight as picturesque as it is truthful and interesting." [P. 207; entries 02620028, 02620028, 02620029, 02620030, and 02620031 were exhibited together as: "Five oil paintings of California scenery."]
