Her highest effort on exhibition is a large sized oil painting, entitled "Indian Vespers," being a copy from that of the eminent landscape painter, A.B. Durand. The treatment and general effect of the picture is imposing, as the interested groups of spectators, always before it, abundantly testified. The original was first exhibited at the rooms of the National Academy, New York, and is a masterly landscape composition, characterized by many of the beautiful effects which Durand loved to portray. The group of majestic trees in the foreground, throwing out their graceful arms to the light of the setting sun; the majestic rocks with their deep shadows; the mountain-forms of the middle distance, all present a beautiful and imposing scene. The copy gives but a faint idea of the original. The forms of the rocks and trees and the general drawing, approach the original picture nearer than the coloring and handling, but it is to these two latter qualities that the landscape painter is indebted for rendering on canvas the beautiful effects in nature. Against the bright rays of the setting sun, Durand never painted shadows in his trees as dark as those in the bank beneath, as represented in the copy. [P. 213.]
