In addition to the special premiums already recommended to young Butler and Mr. Baker, your committee take pleasure in calling attention to the sketches from nature by Miss Maud Needham, of Yreka, as worthy also of a special premium. The drawing of Mount Shasta, which raises his hoary head into the regions of perpetual snow, though only a mimic picture of the sublime original, on which the infinite mind has been at work during immeasurable centuries, cannot fail to convince the thoughtful spectator that "God is the only perfect poet, who, in his own person, acts his own creations." [P. 216.] Sketches of "Mount Shasta" and "Coral Cave." Special premium. F.D. [P. 256; see entry 02620004 for other work noted in this commentary.]
