Durand's sunset landscape, in Mr. Coale's collection, is one of those pictures which the maker himself regarded as one of his happiest efforts. "The picture," says Durand, "is national in scene and color. The subject, in its treatment, appeals to local and domestic sentiment." It is a charming little picture, but has more fancy than fact in its colors and treatment. [P. 77.]
